The Making of Additive Masterbatch

by | Oct 13, 2022

Additive Masterbatch is an advanced concentrate that is used in the plastic coloring process. The entire process involves different additives like color dyes, pigments along with other substances and mixing them with polymer carrier resins. It is then heated, cooled and then extruded into granules or pellets. Made of natural polymer, these granules are then mixed with different colors along with added resin to create a finished product as per the manufacturing requirement. Additive masterbatches have significant thermal conductivity in comparison to polymer resins like HDPE and PP. In fact, its thermal conductivity is six times higher to HDPE and fourteen times higher than PP. What this means is that the heat generated during the plastic coloring process gets transmitted quickly through the concentrate thus ensuring faster heat transfer in the extruder.

Manufacturers prefer masterbatch because it is cost effective and does not harm the overall quality of the finished product. Today, masterbatch products are used in a variety of applications in various countries across the globe. The granules or pellets are used along with other polymer additives to change the properties of the end product as per the manufacturing needs. The requirements can vary from stiffening, infrared, heat stabilizing, anti slip, solar heat reflectors, etc. The beauty of this product is that you can use it against any resin. Most manufacturers use additives that enhance the overall performance of the finished product. In many instances, they also make use of processing additives to make the manufacturing process hassle free and smooth.

Lastly, additive masterbatch not only saves energy but also costs for the manufacturer.
